Chapter Five

Standing at roughly 400 meters tall, Schneider Tower was the tallest structure in Lyon City. Parts and entire sections of the building had been wrecked, taken apart and rebuilt by both supernatural forces and the elements so many times Mael wondered how it remained standing.

Usually, the pricey restaurants and bars on the top floors remained opened until dawn, but the appearance of the dragon taking temporary residency at the tower’s tip had cut closing time short.

Ulfric made some calls, reassuring city council folks he’d handle the mess. Make sure it wouldn’t leak to the press. The call was enough for the entire building to be emptied out, every single person and staff evacuated.

“You sure they’ll come?” Ulfric asked. They walked past the elaborate and empty lobby and entered the lift.

“Of course they will,” Mael said automatically.

Some of the men in Havoc’s crew might not trust Tor and him a hundred percent yet, but they’d proven time and time again they stuck with their own. He felt guilty about playing on Havoc’s strange fatherly instincts to him, but he’d use what he had at hand for Knox. Maybe, if he’d ask for help in the first place, Ulfric and he wouldn’t be in this mess.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Ulfric asked.

“Thinking about us needing to work on our trust issues with other people.” Whatever it was Ulfric had been expecting, it hadn’t been that. Ulfric erupted into a bellyful of laughter.

Mael unconsciously brushed his hand against his bandaged neck, over Ulfric’s healing mating mark. Ulfric’s expression grew sober, uncommonly tender. Mael winced at the sheepish, if not smug smile on his lips.

“Stop grinning at me like I’m some sort of conquest,” Mael said, breathing hard when Ulfric’s figure blurred.

His back hit the wall of the lift. Ulfric grasped a handful of his shirt, teeth bared. Mael thought he made Ulfric mad. Hell, the way a tingle of excitement crept down his spine at the sight of Ulfric’s dilating pupils wasn’t a good sign. Only showed him how badly Ulfric had easily wrapped his fingers around his heartstrings, but not that Mael regretted accepting Ulfric’s mating mark.

After wandering, feeling lost and uncertain about his new life after Solomon’s death, he finally found purpose. His reason for living, and fuck it, who cared if he was a damn greedy bastard for wanting so much?

To have what Ulfric envisioned, a future that included Ulfric and Knox? Mael knew fantasies weren’t just a couple of steps from hard reality. They had leaps and bounds to make. A long road to walk, but if Ulfric was hell-bent on taking it, so would he.

“You aren’t a conquest, Mael. You’re a man I loved, I regretted losing, and took pains to claim again, but you know what?”

Unhinged, but unwilling to show it, Mael asked, “What?”

“You’re fucking worth it.” Ulfric slammed his mouth against his. Mael opened his lips to receive his heat. It felt like a much-needed shot of courage and confidence, like a heady shot of alcohol, both intoxicating and powerful.
